Impact of maternal probiotic-supplemented dietary counselling on pregnancy outcome and prenatal and postnatal growth: a double-blind, placebo-controlled study

Expectant moms who were given probiotic supplements during their pregnancy demonstrated a significantly lower incidence rate of developing gestational diabetes and the probiotic supplementation reduced the risk of the offspring developing signs and symptoms of obesity as well.

The many benefits of healthy bacteria have been well documented and supplementation implemented in many countries around the world for decades.  More recently Americans have become aware of the benefits through commercials for products like GoodBelly and Activia.  Although these products help to raise awareness of the benefits and need for beneficial flora in the intestinal tract, these sources may not be the best choice for people requiring more therapeutic doses for gastro-intestinal health as well as the development of metabolic syndrome and associated conditions.
